Heisman Finalists and intriguing BCS Bowl Games

Heisman trophyIn this episode of the Red Light Sports Ramble, Evan and Troy talk about the six Heisman Finalists that were invited to the award ceremony in New York.  This marks the most players invited since 1994.  The clear favorite is Jameis Winston from Florida State, but the question becomes:

“If he is the clear favorite, why were six players invited to the presentation?”

Four quarterbacks; Jameis Winston (Florida State), Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M), AJ McCarron (Alabama), Jordan Lynch (Northern Illinois) and two running backs; Tre Mason (Auburn), and Andre Williams (Boston College) round out the six Heisman Finalists.  The biggest underdog and surprise of the group has to be Jordan Lynch.  The analysts will say that he lost his chance at the Heisman when his Northern Illinois team lost to Bowling Green in the MAC Championship.  The thing is,  when you compare numbers Jordan Lynch has the most total yards and touchdowns of all the players, along with over 1,800 rushing yards.  The argument will be made that he didn’t play against the same competition as the other five players, but he put up some monstrous numbers.

Jameis Winston, would become the second straight freshman to win the Hesiman.  He has already broken the single season passing record for a freshman with 3,820 yards.  Johnny Manziel; the reigning Heisman winner, has thrown for more yards this year.  However, his rushing totals are significantly lower and so are his rushing touchdowns.  AJ McCarron; the leader of the nations number one team all year until their loss to Auburn, has the lowest output of the quarterbacks.  Jordan Lynch; as stated earlier, leads all quarterbacks with 4,574 yards and 46 touchdowns.

Tre Mason solidified his spot in the final six with and impressive 304 yard rushing day against Missouri in the SEC Championship game.  He has had a solid year with 2,137 total yards and 23 touchdowns.  However, that is nearly 500 yards fewer than Andre Williams from Boston College.  Andre Williams did not catch one pass this year but rushed for an outstanding 2,101 yards.  He was not in the national spotlight playing at Boston College.

The NCAA regular season has ended and now it becomes Bowl Season.  There are a total of 35 bowl games that will be played between December 21 and January 6 , which is the Vizio BCS National Championship Game.  Listen to some of the intriguing matchups this bowl season.

I couldn’t get your Podcast to work today. I missed the show. The Heisman has selected 77 winner, Reggie Bush is the only one who gave back the Trophy. There has been 30 QB selected,, 19 RB and 21 HB selected and no Offensive lineman chose or defensive lineman. Paul Horning has been the only player who played on a losing team 2-8. The first heisman winner never played in the NFL because of a contract squabble.. There has been only 4 players who won MVP in the SB who also won the heisman, at Starbach, Jim Plunkett, Marcus Allen and Desmond Howard. ND and Ohio state has the most Heisman at 7 each. There has been 5 hesiman who played for the Boys, at Starbauch, Tony Dorsett, Hershall walker, Vinny Testeverde, and Eddie George.

There has been a run at QB in the Heisman award the last 14 years. i dont necessarily believe being a winner guarantee you success in the NFL. There has been several Heisman in the last 20 years who have done relatively nothing in the NFL

I believe their is a bias in the Heisman selection, It really not about how the player does but more how his team does. The top 2 College passer were not even invited to the ceremony, in Nick Florence and Derek Carr QB

Derek Carr is the only QB who averages over 400 yards in the passing game.per game. He has 4800 yards plus and 48 TD to 7 Interception on the season

I was looking at the Heisman candidate passing yards and I notice Winston passing yardage is like 1000 yards less than Carr. He also has less TD 10, and has more sacks. I though the Heisman was about the best player in college Football, It appears to be about the team in today voting, If That was the Case why did Paul Horning win it when his team went 2-8 on the season.

I could care less about the Bias of the world. There are so many wrong that take away from some of the better people who deserve the attention.

By the Way Winston came in 8th in Total yardage follow by Manziel who came in at 9th
The Heisman is nothing but a racket by the sport club in NY, Im sure the Mob is involve with selection some how.

If the Heisman was a legit selection you would think the winner would have a better NFL career. That has not been the case. I already gave you the list of player who won SB MVP, and that 4 in 77 years of Heisman selection and 4 in the history of the SB game.
