Cowboys Headaches In What Was An Optimistic Season

Following what appeared to be a pretty good off-season, the Dallas Cowboys managed to once again stay in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The Cowboys kept pretty quiet, but made some off-season moves by picking up some players to fill the depth chart. They signed DT Cedric Thornton and DE Benson Mayowa among some other players.

Then as the off-season moved forward the suspensions started piling up with DE DeMarcus Lawrence who was starting to shine on the defense and DE Randy Gregory, who was a talented but risky draft pick. Both players were initially suspended four games for violating the NFL substance abuse policy, but now it has been reported that Randy Gregory has not only checked into rehab, but he could be facing a 10 game suspension.

As this defense was finally getting stacked and showing signs of improvement, the bad news kept on piling on as the return of Rolando McClain to Valley Ranch after some time away from the organization cast another dark cloud over the blue and silver. Rolando McClain was also handed a suspension for violating the substance abuse policy, and it’s not for four games either: we’re talking TEN GAMES! Now middle linebacker is not too much of a need when you have a stud in Sean Lee hanging around there, but McClain and Lee together was becoming a great duo. Let’s face it, Lee can only benefit the team if he stays healthy (which we all know by now).

When you have a defense that already lacked depth at defensive end and both of your starting defensive ends are gone for the first four games or more of the season, and you’re missing a starting linebacker, now three of your front seven starters are gone!

As I mentioned in the beginning of this article, the Cowboys made some off-season moves by picking up some needed defensive players. With any luck, they will be up to the task and the defense will be up to par.

If things couldn’t get any worse, the week before the start of the 2016 training camp another black cloud  cast above the star. This week there was a report of RB Ezekiel Elliott, (the Cowboys number one pick of the draft and one of the most talented players coming out of college), being accused of domestic violence by his girlfriend. Pictures have been uploaded to Instagram and Elliott denies any wrong doing.  He claims to have text message screen shots proving his innocence. No arrests have been made and the NFL is investigating the matter. Time will tell and more details will arise so I won’t jump to any conclusions.

Alright, so now that you know the negatives, we can move onto the positives: stay tuned.

It’s the suspensions that are really starting to annoy me. Especially with Lawerence. There are a lot of good football players on this team that are being marred by just a few (important) elements.

I really hope we bounce back from last year’s horrible season. Given the circumstances, I still believe our defense will overcome the obstacles we face during the season. We have an amazing defensive coaching staff that goes hand-in-hand with an amazing fitness coach/coordinator Mike Woicik. We got this!!!

Me too. The front office needs to stop signing so many high risk players. Whether it be behavior or injury. This team is lacking depth at too many defensive positions because of it.
